What counts as a dental emergency?

Any situation causing significant pain, swelling, or risk to your tooth is a dental emergency. Common urgent visits include: severe toothache that isn't relieved by over-the-counter pain medication, a dental abscess (swelling or a pimple-like bump on your gum), a broken or cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling causing sensitivity, and uncontrolled bleeding after a recent extraction.

If you're experiencing severe swelling that extends to your jaw, neck, or eye, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a high fever alongside dental pain - go to the emergency room. These can indicate a spreading infection that requires immediate medical attention.

What to do before your appointment

For a toothache: take ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) following package directions - it reduces both pain and inflammation. Apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek in 20-minute intervals. Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks.

For a knocked-out tooth: handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water but don't scrub. Try to reinsert it in the socket and bite down gently on gauze, or keep it in milk or your own saliva until you arrive. Time is critical - getting to us within an hour gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
