Now welcoming new patients — Huntington Park, CA (323) 319-5676

One of the most common questions we hear from new patients: "How often do I actually need to come in?" The answer depends on your situation — but for most people, twice a year is the starting point. Here's what professional cleanings include, what happens if you've skipped a few years, and whether your insurance covers it.

The general recommendation: every 6 months

For most patients with healthy gums and teeth, a professional cleaning every six months is sufficient. This interval allows us to remove tartar buildup before it causes gum disease, catch cavities while small, and monitor your oral health over time. If you have a history of gum disease, build tartar quickly, or have conditions like diabetes that affect oral health, we may recommend visits every 3–4 months.

What a professional teeth cleaning includes

A standard cleaning at Huntington Park Dental Clinic includes: a comprehensive exam by Dr. Adelpour; digital X-rays when needed (significantly lower radiation than traditional film); professional scaling to remove plaque and tartar from teeth and along the gumline; polishing to remove surface stains; an oral cancer screening; and personalized home care guidance. First visits typically take 60–75 minutes. Follow-up cleanings are usually 45–60 minutes.

What if you haven't been to the dentist in years?

You're far from alone — and we don't judge. After a long gap, we may find accumulated tartar, early gum disease, or small cavities. The earlier we catch these, the simpler and less expensive the treatment. If gum disease is present, we may recommend a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) rather than a standard profilaxis. This is often covered by insurance when periodontitis is diagnosed.

Does Denti-Cal cover teeth cleanings?

Yes. Denti-Cal (Medi-Cal Dental) covers routine dental cleanings for adults — generally one to two per year depending on your plan. It also covers comprehensive exams and diagnostic X-rays in most cases. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment so you know exactly what's covered.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a teeth cleaning take?
A standard cleaning and exam takes about 45–60 minutes. If it's your first visit or X-rays are needed, plan for 60–75 minutes.
Does a teeth cleaning hurt?
For most patients, a cleaning is comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or significant tartar buildup, there may be some sensitivity during scaling. Let us know and we can adjust.
Do you accept Denti-Cal for cleanings?
Yes. We accept Denti-Cal and are actively welcoming new Denti-Cal patients for exams and cleanings. Call (323) 319-5676 to schedule.
What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and above the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes below the gumline to treat infected pockets — used when gum disease is diagnosed.
